Bavarian Blue Dianthus
This improved form of the already adaptable and easy-growing Cheddar pink comes to us from Utah plantsperson Richard Anderson who bred the plant over years for its compact habit, evergreen, extra blue-colored foliage, and exceptional bloom. 'Bavarian Blue' is also notable for superior drought tolerance when compared to other cultivars of Cheddar Pink available on the market, as well as increased resistance to both winter foliar burn and crown rot. Long-lived plants develop over years into dense mounds of narrow foliage, sometimes called cushions or mats, which can disappear beneath its heavy bloom of fragrant, frilly pink flowers in late spring and early summer. Best in well drained soils, 'Bavarian Blue' excels in rock and crevice gardens, xeric parkway strips, at the edges of waterwise perennial gardens, and along flagstone pathways where it won’t be grown over by larger neighbors.
