FlowerKisser® Silver Inferno Agastache
Agastache rupestris FlowerKisser® ‘Silver Inferno’ (Hummingbird Mint) from High Country Gardens is a new cultivar of one of our favorite bestselling species. Agastache rupestris was introduced to the horticulture trade by David Salman in 1996, and it has since remained a favorite of High Country Gardeners. ‘Silver Inferno’ was initially selected by David Salman before his passing, and has been introduced under Lauren Carvalho as the Horticultural Manager of High Country Gardens.
Plants in the FlowerKisser® series are particularly nectar-rich and attract many pollinators, including honeybees, native bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The name “flower-kisser” is the translation of “beja-flor,” the Portuguese word for hummingbird! ‘Silver Inferno’ was chosen for the FlowerKisser® series thanks to its striking blossoms, high nectar content, sturdy growth habit, and ease of cultivation.
Compared to the straight native species, ‘Silver Inferno’ has lighter silvery foliage and deeper flower colors, with nearly burgundy calyxes. In cultivation, it also shows greater resistance to powdery mildew. Similar to the classic A. rupestris, it is a magnet for hummingbirds, with a delectable, sweet, minty fragrance like root beer. The nectar-rich blooms are also attractive to bees, butterflies, and hummingbird moths.
It will perform best in a dry, gravelly site. Cutting propagated.
