Fox's Grape Fritillary
Fox’s Grape Fritillary (Fritillaria uva-vulpis) greets mid-spring with stalks of deep maroon bells edged in golden yellow at the tips and insides of the petals. Perfect along borders, in rock gardens, even containers where its lovely presence can be brought up close. Strongly scented, deer and rabbits avoid this plant. Try planting them at intervals throughout your bulb garden so it can share its pest deterring qualities with neighboring plants. Plant it in groups in enriched, well-drained soil with full sun to part shade exposure. It prefers moist soil, but doesn’t like wet feet. After blooming, allow the grass-like foliage to die back naturally. The green leaves replenish the bulbs for next year’s growth. It naturalizes readily to create washes of rich spring color. 8-10" tall x 2-3" wide.
